The seventeenth century saw a boom in book production in the Dutch Republic: more works, more elaborate editions and more print. The increase in travel within the continent and overseas made both people and books find their way to other places. One of these: Rome. Join us, a group of students from different universities accross the Netherlands, on our quest to explore and uncover these works as we follow their footsteps into the Eternal City and into the special collection of the library of the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome (KNIR).

On this website, you can discover our findings in the form of ten separate essays. You can access them by theme in the menu above, or you can take a look at our book shelf below!

On our journey into the study of the rare books of the KNIR collection, we met several specialist who taught us skills from making books from scratch to the wonderful art of marbled paper. We visited expert librarians in the Biblioteca Angelica and the Biblioteca Casanatense, where we were introduced to the rare books in their special collections and the rich history of library institutions in Rome. What we learned during these workshops and excursions has been processed into the essays.

Fundamentally, they all answer the same question: what makes these books worthy of a place in the special collection of the KNIR library?
